Spanish Breweries

Traveller's to Spain can expect to find an abundance of light lagers on the menu. San Miguel is a beer that is typically thought of when the topic of Spanish cervezas comes up. San Miguel is a light lager popular in many parts of Spain, but perhaps not a favourite of the beer connoisseur. If you dig a little deeper, however, you'll find that not only are there other styles of beer made by San Miguel but there are other breweries offering beer to the Spanish market.

The three largest players in the Spanish brew industry are Heineken, Mahou-San Miguel, and Damm.

Heineken is well known worldwide as a Dutch beer maker, but they also have a stronghold in the Spanish market with Heineken Espana. Heineken made their big move in the Spanish market in 1999 when they took over five Spanish owned breweries to add to two breweries they already owned in Spain.

Heineken's big move also resulted in growth for Damm when Spanish regulators stepped in. Damm ended up purchasing two breweries for themselves from Heineken.
